Research indicates that biological ageing is only loosely associated with age in years – some individuals in their 80s have physical and mental capacities similar to those in their 20s. And while this may of course seem to be the exception rather than the rule – significant differences in the rate of physical and mental decline inarguably exist. While colloquially this is often attributed to ‘good genes’ – research indicates the variance is mainly due to environmental and social factors which subsequently shape health behaviours and opportunities. This reaffirms the central role our daily actions play in determining health and vitality as we age.
Musculoskeletal conditions such as sarcopenia and osteoperosis are highly prevalent among older populations – across Europe it is estimated that 32 million individuals aged 50+ have osteoporosis. However the extent of these degenerative issues can be minimised by proactively taking care of our structural health. Mobility and physical functionality can not only be maintained, but also enhanced by frequent engagement in different forms of exercise and physical activity.
While nutrition, sleep and stress management also play their part, movement is key. The current WHO guidelines suggest a mix of aerobic exercise, strength training and neuromotor exercises are necessary to maintain optimum health and mobility as we age . Despite this, only approx. 46% of Irish adults currently meet these guidelines, and this figure plummets among older age categories.
This session addresses simple ways to overcome common barriers to moving more, and explores novel ways to weave exercise into daily routines. It also encompasses technical tips and evidence-based strategies to look after all of the major muscle groups (our ‘prime movers’) as we focus on strength, flexibility and mobility exercises that effectively aid to rebalance the body and optimise form and function.
